Launch of new TV Episode Fit Dogs Rock! on the Pet Network this Wednesday night at 7pm

I remember being very shocked a year ago when the APOP survey confirmed that almost 53% of dogs in the U.S. are overweight.  17% are considered obese. I wanted to do something to help. Our new TV episode reviews this important health issue and offers some possible solutions. It highlights fun activities and some amazing fit dogs and role models from our community. We hope it inspires a few people to be more proActive with their dogs.

“Obesity is the number one preventable medical condition seen in veterinary hospitals today and is the fastest growing health threat of our nation’s children. Our goal is to help pets and people live longer, healthier, and pain-free lives by maintaining a healthy weight, proper nutrition, and physical activity. The most important decision a pet owner makes each day is what they choose to feed their pet. Choose wisely. Your pet’s life depends on it.” Dr. Ernie Ward, founder of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP)

According to APOP,  risks of overweight pets may include:

  • Heart and Respiratory Disease
  • High Blood Pressure (hypertension)
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Many Forms of Cancer
  • Insulin Resistance and Type 2 Diabetes
  • Cranial Cruciate Ligament Injury (ACL)
  • Kidney Disease
  • Decreased life expectancy (up to 2.5 years)

In order to help your dog reach and maintain an ideal weight, it is important to talk to your vet about what that weight is, then feed your dog the right amount of good quality food and treats, and get the right amount of the right exercise. Many owners are not even aware that their dog is overweight and equate food with love (not hard to do when my greedy little Kilo looks at me with those big puppy eyes)

The financial and physical costs of owning an overweight dog can be significantly higher than owning a “Fit Dog”. You probably spend more on food, treats, vet bills and medications. The quality and length of the life of your dog may also be affected. As I have found with Kilo, an additional bonus of exercising and bonding more with your  “Fit Dog” is that your own weight, health and mood may also improve.

We had a very very limited budget and only 24 minutes to get such important messages out on TV. We could not have done it without you.

I am a little teary-eyed first because of all the work you did to get this all important message out there and also because you have honored me by making my dogs and I a part of it. I honestly feel like I may finally be making amends with my poor childhood dog, Natasha, who was obese and died way too young because of it, I swore to never allow that to happen to another dog of mine. That has now extended into inspiring others to be educated enough to keep their dogs healthy and fit too. Thank you so, so much.
