How to Make Easy Dog-Friendly “Dogs in a Blanket”

Dog Licks Recipe

dog in a blanket treat recipe

I love looking at cute dog faces anywhere anytime. A few weeks ago, I was thinking of snacks for kids and dogs when we were holding a playgroup to test our Penny P Pug Picture Book story. I thought little  dog-friendly hot dogs in pastry that looked like dogs could be very cute and yummy.

Kilo absolutely loves hot dogs but can only have small amounts as he is always watching his waist. They are such high-value treats or rewards, he only gets them on special occasions. He also loves cookies and pastry treats and I like no added sugar and limited ingredients.

He got a bit nervous when I said I was cooking Dogs in a Blanket from his position supervising on the couch. He climbed up like a ninja and stole a small sample of one of these Dogs In A Blanket when I was not looking on the day we were testing the recipe – he just could not resist the smell. They were almost too dog-friendly LOL. Then he got small pieces as rewards for tricks the day of the shoot and LOVED them.

Kids can add ketchup or mustard and should love them too.

Total Time: 20 minutes
Prep: 10 minutes
Cook: 10 minutes

Yield: 2 Treats

Difficulty: Easy

Ingredients

dog in a blanket ingredients Dog-friendly Pastry

  • –  half cup flour (I used plain white but have also tried whole wheat and rice)
  • –  2 tbsp olive oil  or coconut oil
  • –  2 tablespoons of water (add water as needed until flour sticks together)
  • 1 hot dog (I use all beef,  high quality)
  • 3 pieces of Kibble (you can substitute ketchup, mustard dabs, little pieces of meat, or vegetables for eyes and nose for kids)
  • Dog-Friendly Peanut Butter or Cream Cheese

Directions

Preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Mix dough ingredients together until sticky.mixing the pastry dough
  3. Knead dough into two firm balls.
  4. Sprinkle flour on the surface of the chopping board to avoid sticking.
  5. Roll balls into flat thin circles one at a time.rolling the dough
  6. Cut a hot dog into thirds.
  7. Cut each third of a hot dog in half, open.
  8. Place one piece of hot dog in the lower center half of the dough circle.putting the dog in the blanket
  9. Fold circle of pastry in half over the hot dog.
  10. Fold over pastry ears. Firm or trim the bottom edgesfolding the pastry
  11. Cut two small slits to emphasise ears and one in the centre of the dough for the tongue to peek outcutting the pastry

Cooking

  1. Bake on a lightly greased tray for 10 minutes at 400′ or until light golden brown (I spray coconut oil very lightly on tray).
  2. Take out of the oven and let cool slightly.

Decorating

  1. Use dabs of dog-friendly peanut butter or cream cheese to secure kibble eyes and nose to the pastry. (Use little slices of meat, veggies, or dabs of ketchup or mustard instead of kibble for human consumption).
  2. Add Hot Dog tongue piece (I microwave uncooked hot dog pieces quickly before including)

These are truly adorable! You have given me a great idea and this might be a perfect project for my daughter and her friends. I always feel badly that I don’t have enough time to make these homemade treats for Ruby but this definitely might be a project for kids to help with!
