We love dogs so we really enjoy watching Dog Movies with Dog Stars.
In fact, we have written our own romantic comedy about a rescue puppy that plays cupid in the Dog Park called Pippy Love.
We did a lot of research and thought other dog lovers would enjoy our totally subjective list of 20 Top Dog Movies
Best In Show
As we just came back from Westminster, a special mention for one of my favourites “Best in Show”, the hilarious Mockumentary about an assortment of obsessive dog lovers preparing for and participating in the Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show.
Talent Hounds Film
Plus a special mention for our own documentary Series starting with the one hour special that traces the history of dogs and the changing talents and roles they play enriching our lives.
1. Beethoven
A slobbering St. Bernard becomes the centre of attention for a loving family, but his veterinarian secretly wants to kill him.
2. Air Bud
A young boy and a talented stray dog with an amazing basketball playing ability become instant friends. All the sequels that followed were just as adorable!
3. Marley and Me
A family learns important life lessons from their adorable, but naughty and neurotic dog. Fun fact : Marley was played by 18 different puppies and dogs throughout filming! This movie was based on the very successful book.
4. The Wizard of Oz
Who can forget how cute and brave Toto was! We’re also lucky to have the winner of the CBC TV search for Toto on “Over The Rainbow” in our Talent Hounds episode “Rescues Rock!” and our live shows. Shout out to Linzy!
5. My Dog Skip
A heartfelt movie staring a young Frankie Muniz, as a shy boy growing up in 1940s Mississippi with the help of his beloved dog, Skip.
6. Benji
A stray dog saves two kidnapped children. Benji was played by a shelter dog named Higgens. Higgens’ offspring Benjean played him for a few of the later films!
7. Lassie
A beautiful well-trained Collie called Pal played the original Lassie. Since his death, Pal’s descendants have continued to play Lassie in more recent films.
8. Because of Winn-Dixie
A mischievous dog befriends a lonely young girl in a new town and helps her make friends. Lyco and Scott, two Picardy Shepherds shared the role.
9. Hachi: A Dog’s Story
A college professor (Richard Gere) adopts an abandoned Akita puppy he finds at his local railroad station. They fall madly in love and then tragedy strikes. It is based on a true story of extraordinary loyalty about a Japanese man and his dog Hachiko from the 1920s .
10. 101 Dalmatians
The 101 dalmatian puppies are adorable in this Disney favourite.
11. Peaty from “The Little Rascals”
The only pitbull in the “he-man woman haters club”, he was a club house lookout! I loved “Little Rascals”.
12. Marmaduke
A suburban family moves to a new neighbourhood with their large yet loveable Great Dane, who has a tendency to wreak havoc in his own oblivious way.
13. Turner and Hootch
A detective must adopt the dog of a dead man to help him find the murderer.
14. Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey
1993 Disney Remake: Two dogs Chance, Shadow and Sassy the cat escape from a California ranch to search for their owners in San Francisco. What an ending!
The Incredible Journey 1963 An aging English bull terrier, a young yellow Lab and an intrepid Siamese cat leave their dog sitter’s house and travel 200 miles across Canada, trying to get home to their real family.
15. Old Yeller
A classic movie about a boy and his stray dog. Plus who can forget that rabies scene!
16. Eight Below
Gorgeous Paul Walker and a pack of dogs journeying in the Arctic.
17. Lady and the Tramp
Who doesn’t want to share spaghetti and meatballs on a date after this?
18. Scooby-Doo
The cartoon comedy franchise featured four teenagers—Fred Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley and Norville “Shaggy” Rogers—and their talking brown Great Dane dog named Scooby-Doo, who solve mysteries involving supposedly supernatural creatures through a series of antics and missteps.
19. Fluke
Workaholic Thomas Johnson dies in an auto accident and comes back to life as a dog. Can he save his wife and son from the man who caused his accident?
This happens to be our friend Jenny from the Pet Network’s favourite movie, “One of my fave dog movies is Fluke. The scene at the end when Fluke is sitting with the little boy in the snow gets me EVERY TIME.”
20. Cats vs. Dogs
The battle continues! A look at the top-secret, high-tech espionage war going on between cats and dogs, which their human owners are blissfully unaware of.
