German Shepherd
The German Shepherd originated in Germany and is a relatively new working breed, a little more than a hundred years old. It was first exhibited at a show in 1882, although its working and herding ancestry dates further back.
German Shepherds are highly trainable, loyal and protective and are the most popular dogs in law enforcement, military and guarding. Their versatility can make them valuable additions to a family household if you have the time and energy to train and exercise them. They are loyal to their people but can be wary of strangers. They do not have the soft mouth of a hunting dog like a lab. Their courage and warm generous spirit were popularized by some of the most beloved dog movie stars, notably Rin Tin Tin and Strongheart and they are often recognized as Heroes.
German Shepherds are characterized by large and long frames, long snouts and long erect ears, black masks on the face (unless all black), with medium to long coats that shed all year long.

I just adopted an adult from local pound. I think I’m joining the club – after only one day.
I did get a lot of input from the people at the pound about her history & temperament. I hadn’t realized until she was brought to my attention, that I was not against a challenge – for a rewarding relationship.
I’m fortunate to be retired, and living alone, which matched her needs, as best the shelter staff could tell.
