Boston Terrier
The Boston Terrier originated in (of course!) Boston in the 1800s. Originally bred for pit fighting, the breed is a combination of the early Bulldog and Bull Terrier. When the blood sport was outlawed, a group of individuals who loved the breed worked to promote its recognition.
A “Gentleman’s dog”, the Boston Terrier has a short muzzle with erect ears, but lacks the characteristic wrinkles in the face of a bulldog or pug. Originally categorized with bull terriers, Boston Terriers were nicknamed “roundheads” before acquiring the Boston moniker from where they arose. The Boston’s coat is coloured black, brindle or seal with white markings, and they are a low shedding dog as they do not have an undercoat.
Boston Terriers are active and lively with big charming personalities. With patient owners they are highly trainable and though their exercise needs are minimal, they enjoy sports and other activities.
