Happy Cinco de Mayo- Pawty Time
Kilo the Pug Ready to Pawty – guarding my bottle of tequila.
Cinco de Mayo means Fifth of May in Spanish. It is a celebration of Mexican culture and history held on May 5th in the US and Mexico.
The date commemorates the Mexican army’s unlikely victory over the larger, better equipped French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.
Time magazine commented, “The Puebla victory came to symbolize unity and pride for what seemed like a Mexican David defeating a French Goliath.” It helped establish a sense of patriotism. Since the Battle of Puebla, no country in the Americas has been invaded by a European military force.
I love Mexico and visit as often as I can (usually the Yucatan Peninsula in recent years). We’ll be celebrating with Mexican food, music and margaritas at my house tonight.
Happy Cinco de Mayo. Feliz May Fifth.
