How To Make Delicious DIY Dog-Friendly Dachshund Cookies
Keeping Up Our Love Affair with Love Dachshunds
Did you know that the Dachshund is reported to be one of the 10 most popular dog breeds in the US according to the AKC?
There is something irresistible about their long slim bodies, long noses, sweet faces, and tiny legs. H. L. Mencken said that “A dachshund is a half-dog high and a dog-and-a-half long,”
We’ve featured many adorable dachshunds on Talent Hounds like Arthur the blind rescue and Blue the dumpster rescue, our fit pals from Seattle, You Did What With Your Weiner and superstar Crusoe the Celebrity Dachshund to name a few. We also like to support Wienerfest for their rescue efforts and various other events and rescues for the breed.
They are a lot of personality in a small package and can sometimes be a little stubborn to train, although not in the cases above.
Being the owner of dachshunds, to me a book on dog discipline becomes a volume of inspired humor. Every sentence is a riot. One day, if I ever get a chance, I shall write a book, or warning, on the character and temperament of the dachshund and why he can’t be trained and shouldn’t be. I would rather train a striped zebra to balance an Indian club than induce a dachshund to heed my slightest command. When I address Fred I never have to raise either my voice or my hopes. He even disobeys me when I instruct him in something he wants to do. — E. B. White

Ingredients
Dog-Friendly Cookies:
- 2 1/2 cups flour (I used plain white but have also tried with rice and whole wheat)
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons of peanut butter
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tablespoons of cooked pumpkin (I used unsweetened 100% natural canned this time for convenience but usually bake my own) other options include bananas, parsley, etc
- 1 teaspoon of maple syrup, honey, or sugar
- 1 egg
To Decorate:
- peanut butter
- carob Faux “chocolate” frosting (1/4 cup carob powder, 2 tbsp water)- read more about carob as a healthy chocolate substitute here.
- blueberries
- strawberry
- yogurt
- white fondant (or make separate small cookies from dough above to attach)
Directions
Preparation
- Preheat oven to 350F
- Combine flour, baking powder, sugar and the egg in a bowl.
- Add water, and stir, then add pumpkin, peanut butter and continue to stir until you have a firm dough. You may need to use your hands to knead it into a circle.
- Lightly flour your surface, roll out the dough.
- Create a teardrop shape for the face.
- Bake for 10 minutes, or until golden brown.
Assembly
Let cookies cool for 10 minutes before decorating.
- Cover the base cookie in peanut butter.
- Roll out and cut two ears (we used a heart shape cut in half) and a thin strip for the nose from the white fondant (or make from cookie dough and cook with rest).
- Paint the ears and nose strip and the top of the head with carob.
- Stick blueberries on as eyes and nose. (Dot eyes with yogurt for the whites)
- Add a strip of strawberry for the tongue.
- Enjoy!

Love this! Smple, effective and I reckon every doxie owner can give this a go. Well done on the photographs. They are clear and not ‘perfect’ which would intimidate me no end if I wanted to make them!

These are really cute. I’m really anti-sugar when it comes does to either myself, or my dogs. Honey is a great substitute, though! I’m glad you give your readers the option.

These are very cute! Since my dog has a sensitivity to grains I have to be careful what treats I give her. I imagine she could have one of the non wheat flours, but I’m hesitant to try.

These dog cookies are so cute. I think dachshunds are popular because they are funny though the ones I know take themselves very seriously.

Loving this series! Mr. N is still waiting for your Yorkie treat and he requests that it be either super meaty or cheese-y.
