I love watching romantic comedies or romcoms any time of the year but especially around Valentine’s and Christmas. I love the predictability and the optimism. They are a great escape for me.
Why is it that the best romantic comedies often feature a dog? Perhaps they represent the unconditional love sought by the leading characters, or maybe it’s because they’re just so cute. Whatever it is, I love spending Valentine’s Day curled up watching with Kilo the Pug.
In fact, I love them so much I co-wrote one called “Pippy Love” about a rescue puppy playing cupid for 2 sisters and we are working on convincing a broadcaster or OTT player to commission it as the script is so good.
Here we compile a list of the best romantic comedies for Valentine’s Day and the dogs that steal the show.
- Legally Blonde (2001): Bruiser the Chihuahua
- There’s Something About Mary (1998): Puffy the Border Terrier
- Must Love Dogs (2005): Mother Theresa the Newfoundland
- You’ve Got Mail (1998): Brinkley the Golden Retriever
- As Good As It Gets (1997): Verdell the Brussels Griffon
- Sweet Home Alabama (2002): Bryant the Bloodhound
- Marley & Me (2008): Marley the Labrador – not really a rom com as a bit sad at the end.
- The Truth About Cats and Dogs (1996): Hank the Hound
- Bringing Up Baby (1938): George the Wire Fox Terrier

I love Legally Blonde!! I haven’t seen any of those others. I actually do have a pet-related romcom on my list, Unleashed – it’s about a girl whose cat and dog turn into men, and she has to choose which would be a better boyfriend.. or something. It has a lot of my favorite actors in it. Awesome giveaway!

Bringing Up Baby is one of my all time favorites! It’s an oldie, but it resonated with me – thanks for reminding me of this sweet, cute movie!

LOL I remember many of these titles! My favorite was “As Good as it Gets”. I mean aside from Jack Nicolson, that dog totally made that film!! Great selection just in time for Valentines day!

Nothing like snuggling up with the pups while watching a favourite show or movie. I must admit rom com isn’t my genre, but I have seen You’ve Got Mail and loved it!!

Me too!

I love it! My fience isn’t really a romantic comedy type of guy, but my dogs!? Why didn’t I think of this before haha. I’m totally going to have to have a movie night with my boys (dogs) this week. They’ll happily watch anything with me, especially if there’s snuggling and popcorn involved.

Confession here, I am not a big movie fan, I love documentaries but movies I can live without, might sound crazy but that is me. Thanks for the giveaway and Happy Valentines Day everyone with a woof from Layla

I have seen and enjoyed all those movies with the exception of Bringing Up Baby. I will have to check it out!
Sometimes I confess I watch the movies for the pets and not the people. 😉

Nature shows are the winner around here – the cats like to watch the birds and animals and fish in things like Blue Planet or Planet Earth.
I loved Marley and Me – I saw it with friends on Christmas Day the year it came out and we all cried. It was a great movie though. I like movies that give you an excuse to cry

These are all fantastic movies, I love them all! Great picks, I would also add The Secret Life of Pets. Not a traditional RomCom, but a romantic comedy just the same except the love is between each pet and their owner as well as Max and his new brother Duke. It starts off contentious but they end up loving each other & become besties.

I’ve seen all of those movies except There’s Something About Mary and All About Bringing Up Baby. I think Legally Blonde is one of my favorites, but I do love Marley and Me. Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day.
