As you may know if you read my reviews and blog, my little rescue rascal Kilo the Pug loves to eat.
Kilo gets a small amount of high quality kibble for breakfast and dinner. I add a little bit of water, as well as tiny bit of banana and Greek yoghurt in the morning and a spoon full of fresh cooked meat and veggies, toppers, wet food or raw boost in the evening. I also use kibble as Kilo’s slightly lower value treats for training during the day so he effectively works for part of his meals.
I do a lot of research on the kibble I feed Kilo. Over the last 3 years, he has mainly eaten Canadian-made premium high quality brands.
Sponsored Nutram Dog Food Product Review
I was introduced to Heather, the marketing director for Nutram Dog Food (and other Pet Products), at a local Canadian Pet Expo event by our friends at the Dog Lovers Days Lure Course (Nutram is a sponsor).
She gave me some samples of their kibble for Kilo to try.
Kilo seemed to really like the kibble and I liked what she told me about their ingredients.
I wanted to know more. I was really excited when she contacted me and suggested we make a sponsored video together explaining their unique brand story and holistic approach.
100% Canadian like Kilo the Pug
Based in Elmira, Ontario, Nutram is a 100% Canadian, family-owned pet wellness company.
Elmira is about 1.5 hours from Toronto so I drove out to see the facilities, interview Heather and get some more product for my greedy little pug. We also filmed her gorgeous fit dog having fun in the snow.
Holistic Nutrition
I asked Heather about the term “holistsic” and she explained that Holistic Nutrition is an inside-out approach to pet health looking at combinations of ingredients that work together and the health of the whole body starting with the gut.
Dictionary definition of holistic: “characterized by comprehension of the parts of something as intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole“.
Heather explained that Nutram’s nutritional philosophy is based on sound scientific principles and decades of experience in producing pet food.
All-Natural North American sourced Highest Quality Ingredients
Nutram products are all-natural, and made with the highest quality ingredients. All meats are grown without the use of hormones or antibiotics.
Their recipes are all wheat, tapioca, soy, potato and corn-free, and naturally preserved with rosemary and mixed tocopherols – a form of Vitamin E.
Nutram is committed to the highest standards of pet food quality and factory safety. Their in-house quality control begins with a rigorous review of each ingredient and extends throughout the entire production system.
In addition to being HACCP Certified, they also hold one of the highest pet food quality certifications available. The BRC Global Standards are a leading global safety and quality certification program that facilitates standardization of quality, safety, operational criteria and manufacturers’ fulfillment of legal obligations.
Two Key principles: Optimum Absorption and Optimum Combinations.
Nutram is devoted to delivering the best ingredients through two key principles, Optimum Absorption and Optimum Combinations.
Optimum Absorption
Some say you are what you eat. At Nutram, they believe you are what you ABSORB and that most diseases start in the gut. This makes sense to me for pets and humans.
By promoting a healthy gut, this leads to better nutrient absorption, a better ability to utilize nutrition and, in turn, to better overall health.
Optimum Food Combinations
Their holistic approach is not just about healthy ingredients but about how the different components interact and how they impact the body.
That’s why they focus on the science of pairing superior ingredients that work better together to support pets’ total well-being.
Nutram’s team of in-house Certified Nutritionists and Holistic Experts craft each recipe to ensure that pets receive all of the benefits of each ingredient, as nature intended.
For example, Cranberries have a natural acidic property that prevents bacteria from adhering to the bladder walls. Celery Seeds are a natural diuretic that helps the body flush the bacteria out. When paired together in the right amounts, you receive a Healthy Bladder benefit.
Optimum Combinations ingredient pairings complement one another’s benefits to take our holistic nutrition to the next level.
Menu
Nutram offers complete and balanced meals for everyday nutrition so dogs (and cats) can live their best lives. Their menu comes with 3 options:
Sound – Balanced Wellness – cooked to deliver optimum balance of nutrition and taste for each life stage.
Ideal – Solution support – crafted to support special pet wellness needs including weight control, skin & coat, stomach, and indoor lifestyle.
Total – Grain-Free – for pet parents looking for grain-free options that provide complete nutrition with low glycemic carbs.
I also noted that they have different size options. Kilo’s girlfriend Ms. Charmin likes a small kibble soaked and softened as she does not have many teeth in that tiny mouth. Kilo likes a bigger size and chewing it. Linzy likes a few bites as treats.
Unboxing and Tast Testing by Kilo the Pug = A+
But it’s not just nutrition and quality, it’s taste!
Just look at Kilo the Pug our official taste tester – he gives a big paws up.
We all believe our pets deserve the very best and I think that Nutram Dog Food is best for Kilo right now. He has been eating it for a few months now and seems to be thriving.
Kilo has tried all 3 varieties but I have chosen Ideal as he needs a little weight control and lives a pretty indoor lifestyle, especially in winter.
Where can I buy Nutram?
You can find Nutram at Canadian pet specialty retail locations and in over 30 countries worldwide.

Dog likes it. Was feeding it Purina. Since trying Nutram, a watery cyst she has is disappearing, along with a harder smaller lump.
Good solid output too. No constipation or looseness.
Only one month on the stuff. What I call a result.
We tried other fancy expensive brands but she didn’t like them.
Hoping for some weight loss and may go grain free……

This is a great article! I’m always so worried about whether or not I’m buying the best food for my pets.

As a breeder I raise Frenchtons.
I switched to NUTRAM after having issues with skin allergies & yeast infections in their ears from a very well known top brand.
I’m very glad I did because there was a huge recall of that other product.
I now use Nutram as all food allergies disappeared, eliminating the high cost of veterinary remedies (meds)
All the dogs coats are glossy & soft & they have excellent body weights & muscle condition. Whelping mum’s pups are excellent gainers as the mum is fed the dry puppy food with a ¼ c warm water & a Tbsp scoop of goat’s milk powder for added calcium.

How lucky you switched when you did. They are not only a wonderful food but nice caring people. Sounds like it is working well for you.

Started buying Nutram since my pup was 3 months old or so, I still feed her up until this day because she never had any issues with it. For a month, while we had quarantine, I switched to a different brand and she immediately started showing signs of stomach issues and digest – also had bad poopoo. I always check for reviews regarding my dog’s food and I am happy to know that it’s one of the best rated brands worldwide.
Thank you for the article aswell. Cheers

Hi, I adopted a stray dog here in China, a poodle. My friend recommended me Nutram, the brand she’s feeding her poodle, so I bought it at my Vet’s. Asia loves it! She was slightly underweight so I gave her a little bit more nibbles for a while until she reached her standard weight of 3.3 kg. Now we are back to the daily dose reccomended for active dogs and, so far, she is healthy and happy to walk with me for about 5 km on a daily basis! Very informative article! Thanks
Talent Hounds says
Yay I am so glad it worked for you and Asia. Thanks!

Not sure if I like the Canola oil in this brand. It doesn’t say if it’s non-GMO. If it isn’t I would avoid this product.
