Cause 4 Canines Helps Fight Horrific Dog Meat Trade in Asia
“Dogs Are Friends and Family – Not Food”
We are always sad to hear about the continued use of dog meat as food in some parts of Asia. The dogs are treated worse than most livestock, and are brutally slaughtered in horrific conditions for their meat. We sometimes feel helpless watching these atrocities go down from half a world away, but we are happy to share that there is a new way to show our support. If you want to play a part in fighting the dog meat trade in Asia and you live in Ontario, please consider joining the first annual Cause 4 Canines fundraiser.
Cause 4 Canines is an organization that donates all funds raised to foundations that are committed to ending the dog meat trade in Asia, a cause any dog lover can get behind. They are dedicated to ending the cruelty and suffering of the dog meat trade, and they have recently announced the first annual CAUSE 4 CANINES Fundraiser featuring cocktails, beer tasting, hors d’oeuvres, a silent/live auction, a 50/50 draw, music, and more!

“Please join us for a fun evening as we support affected animals and help end the Dog Meat Trade. Your support will make a difference!” –Alana Lewis, Founder of CAUSE 4 CANINES
DATE: Saturday, October 22nd, 2016
TIME: 7:30 PM
LOCATION: Oakville Club, 56 Water Street, Oakville, ON
The Dog Meat Trade condemns millions of dogs to death every year in the most horrific and inhumane ways possible. Slaughterhouses torture dogs to death, with the thought that it produces a better quality/more tender meat (due to the release of endorphins as the animal suffers).
CAUSE 4 CANINES is dedicated to raising funds for global foundations that are committed to ending the Dog Meat Trade. These foundations rescue affected animals, provide survivors with a safe haven as they await adoption, shut down dog meat farms, and lobby for legislative changes to ban the trade.

About The Dog Meat Trade in Asia
You may have heard of the Asian dog meat trade because of the Yulin Dog Meat Festival, an annual celebration held in Yulin, China, in which festival goers eat dog meat and lychees. The festival spans about ten days, and it is estimated that 10,000 to 15,000 dogs are consumed. We spoke to activist Lisa Vanderpump about the #StopYulin Campaign and the Vanderpump DogsTM Foundation at Global Pet Expo in March.
Another major festival is Bok-Nal in Korea, where each year over two million dogs are slaughtered by Korea’s unregulated dog meat industry. During Bok-Nal through July and August, two-thirds of the dogs are killed for Boshintang (dog meat soup). Many Koreans believe that Boshintang boosts their stamina and energy, which is why it is often called a nutritious soup.
Unfortunately, the consumption of dog meat is not only popular in China and Korea, but also in Thailand, Bali, Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippians, where millions of dogs are being killed and tortured every year.
The dogs are supplied for consumption through two avenues: dog meat farms, and through the abduction of family pets. Dog meat farms exist on both large and small scales and many are so bad they make Puppy Mills look good. Many “farmers” got into the business years ago and stay active due to the high profitability. These dogs are born into the cruel reality that they will never be held, loved, or feel safe. Instead, their lives will be consumed with pain, fear, hopelessness, and death. They never live outside of a metal cage, they only get one meal (if they are lucky) per day until it is time to sell when they may be force fed rice to increase their weight, and have limited access to water. They are left outside in the elements during the hot summer days and freezing winter nights, with no protection, blankets, or even a mat to stay on… most of the dogs develop deformities due to being in these cramped cages, and pressure sores due to standing on cage floors (where their paws have no support). Many times you’ll see dogs curled up in their water dishes just for relief from the metal cage floor.
To make matters worse, the second supply of dogs for consumption comes from thieves who literally steal family pets or strays and sell them directly to markets, restaurants, and festivals for slaughter.
Because this industry is unregulated, dogs in Asia are taken from different countries to supply surrounding nations with meat. While transport trucks carry hundreds of dogs stuffed into crates to the slaughterhouses, many die on the way given the conditions, lack of water, congestion, and fear. The Soi Dog Foundation has worked hard with the Thai government to stop criminals transporting hundreds of thousands of dogs and bring an end to the dog meat silk road. The dogs that make it past transport are then sold to a slaughterhouse/market, bound, gagged, and either beaten to death, burned or boiled alive, skinned alive, crucified to walls, or dismembered alive. Those that eat dog meat believe that if you torture the dog as they die, the consumer gains more power and vitality from the meat and it becomes more tender. Because of this “tradition” the immense torture these dogs endure is barbaric beyond anything we can imagine.

We encourage you to do whatever you can to help the activists working to rescue dogs intended for slaughter. We are thrilled to be able to support the Cause 4 Canines fundraiser, giving us a chance to bring hope to dogs that have never experienced human affection in their lives.
