Great Dane
The Great Dane originated in Germany, where it has been known since the Middle Ages. This giant breed holds lineage back to both Irish Wolfhounds and Mastiff mixes, and are of the largest dog breeds. In fact, a Great Dane named Zeus, currently holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s largest dog. Originally bred as a war dog, to hunt wild boar and patrol estates, the Great Dane today is a loving and loyal companion.
This gentle giant is often known as “the heartbreaker” due to its short life span (6-8 years), and has been called by some “the world’s largest lapdog”. Great Danes are elegant and docile, with great affection for its family, but proper care, socialization and supervision around children is advised. Daily exercise is required and careful attention should be given during their rapid growth period to prevent joint problems from arising. Great Danes have short sleek coats that come in a variety of colors including fawn, blue, and black and require only minimal grooming.
Great Danes have been often featured in popular media, the more famous being Scooby-Doo and Marmaduke, just to name a few!
