Have A Happy And Safe Canada Day!
History of Canada Day
July 1st has been a day of national celebration and festivities since 1868. Canadians across the country and around the world show their pride in their history, culture and achievements.
Today we honour the enactment of the Constitution Act, 1867 (then called the British North America Act, 1867). It united three colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada into a federation of four provinces, a single country called Canada within the British Empire.
Originally called Dominion Day (French:Le Jour de la Confédération), the holiday was renamed to Canada Day in 1982, the year the Canada Act was passed.
Sing The Canadian National Anthem
“O Canada“officially became Canada’s singular national anthem in 1980, when the Act of Parliament making it received Royal Assent. Calixa Lavallée wrote the music in 1880 for a patriotic poem composed by poet and judge Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier.
Join Louie (in loving memory- it was his favourite song) and Sing Along to O Canada with your dog!
Here are the lyrics:
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
3 Pet Safety Tips
National holidays like July 1st in Canada and July 4th in the US can be dangerous or frightening for pets. Many don’t like the sound of fireworks and can become very frightened. The days after are very busy at shelters as so many dogs and cats escape through open doors or run away.
Be sure to keep your pet safe, happy and calm
1) Keep them inside in a safe secure place (possibly even in their crate or a dark room if they are really afraid).
2) Keep them distracted during the celebrations. I find a chew or stuffed Kong can work well. Some people find music or TV can cover the loud noises.
3) Make sure they are microchipped and have tags, just in case the worst happens and they do get lost.
Some people find that thunder shirts or natural scents and products help with calming too.
Kilo loves to stay cuddled up on the couch with toys and treats for the night. Luckily things are not too noisy near us.
We recommend plenty of early walks and activity during the day to help tire your dog out mentally and physically for the evening.
