How To Make Adorable Cupcakes That Look like Huskies – Dog Licks Recipe
We love Huskies and so do lots of our friends. We have featured rescues like beautiful Laika and trick dog Maya and are planning a story on Husky Therapy Dogs.
Read: Is A Husky The Right Dog Breed For Me?
It was recently our husky pal Shelby’s 9th Birthday from Gone To The Snow Dogs so we got inspired to try to make a husky-themed cupcake.
Ingredients
Cupcake Base
- 2 cups flour (I used plain white flour but rice flour should work well if you need gluten free)
- a pinch of salt (you can leave out but may leave cake a little flat)
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 cup butter softened (we tested using a tablespoon of butter, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, and 2 tablespoons of natural Greek Yoghurt as I had run out of butter, plus less fat)
- 1/2 cup sugar (if for kids and you want to make sweeter, you can add more sugar or a little honey)
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup milk
Decorating
- White Fondant – we bought a little box of ready made after checking ingredients were OK for Kilo (confectioners sugar, water, gelatin unflavored, glucose, cornstarch and glycerine). He doesn’t actually seem that interested so I think I would just use low fat cream cheese mixed with a little low-fat yoghurt next time and maybe a marshmallow for the muzzle.
- Peanut Butter
Dog Safe Faux “Chocolate” Icing
- 1/4 cup carob powder (I was super excited to learn about carob- what a great substitute for chocolate)
- 2 tbsp water (mix into a paste – adjust water to get desired thickness or a drop of oil)
Directions
Preparation
Decorating
- Dust wooden board and rolling pin with flour
- Roll out fondant as thin as possible while still smooth.
- Cut out 2 circles with a glass, take one circle and cut a thin triangle 1/3 down the centre. Set aside.
- Next cut out two eyes, ears and triangles for a muzzle and a nose. I actually hand shaped them to make thicker and the right shapes. Shape a tongue too or use a strawberry cut to shape, then set aside. Dust hands to avoid sticking.
- “Frost” the cupcake with peanut butter to secure the fondant (and for taste)
- Lay the circle shape over the cupcake and layer on details.
- With store bought cake decorating colours or fruit or veggies, add pink to the tongue and blue for the eyes. Let dry.
- Lightly spread some carob paste onto the top of the face, then outline ears, eyes and dab the nose.
- Enjoy!

Kilo loved his little Husky friend and thoroughly enjoyed his job as official taste tester. He was disappointed when I took the cupcake away after a few licks – I think he thought his birthday was continuing. He did get to eat part of the little bowtie cookie after a few tricks and poses.

SO CUTE! I can’t get over how much I love this series. I went to UConn and our mascot was a husky. This would be perfect for a little tailgating with Henry!

OMG that is too cute. They are for people, right? If you could make a black schnoodle, that would be awesome. But all black icing might not be. I’ll send you a photo of Victor if you want to try 😉
Talent Hounds says
Yes humans and dogs can eat them -they are not quite as sweet as aome human recipes as Kilo the official taster and I don’t care. Sure. I can try to create Victor – I use the Carob for black.
