Toronto Mega Pet Adoption Success:
Over 600 Animals In Forever Homes
We are very happy to announce this past weekend, more than 600 animals found their forever homes.
Thanks to PetSmart Charities of Canada and the Toronto Humane Society, Durham Humane Society, Toronto Cat Rescue, Toronto Animal Services, Toronto Cat Rescue, Welland Humane Society, The Humane Society of Durham Region, Lincoln County Humane Society, Fort Erie SPCAand the Annex Cat Rescue.
The second annual three-day Toronto Mega Pet Adoption Event was such a success, they had to close a day early!
About The Adoption Event
In 2014, PetSmart Charities of Canada and Toronto’s animal welfare community decided to take a stand against pet homelessness and launched the large-scale 3-day adoption event. 585 homeless pets found forever homes across the Greater Toronto Area. Check out the video re-cap of all the excitement below.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euAKHwKgIP0It is a community collaborative effort lead by the Toronto Humane Society and Toronto Animal Services and is proudly sponsored by PetSmart Charities of Canada and PetSmart®.
“Sadly over 15,000 pets enter shelters in the Greater Toronto Area each year.” -PetSmart Charities
The mass adoption marks a breakthrough in the way shelter pets are traditionally viewed.
In 2015, hopeful pet owners once again flocked to the shelter to adopt a pet at a reduced fee. They paid a one-time-only adoption fee of $25 — considerably cheaper than the average price of $200 for a dog or $100 for a kitten. All adoptable pets were spayed/neutered and fully vaccinated.
This year’s event was so successful that all the dogs were adopted by the end of the first day. The remaining animals were adopted by Saturday, which meant the event was closed Sunday.
In an interview with the Toronto Star, Barbara Steinhoff, Executive Director of the THS shared her joy for many of the shelter’s pets who have been waiting to find a loving home.
“We did have some animals in the shelter that had been there a long time without finding a perfect match. It really tugs at your heart. But it was great to see that they finally found someone to care for them.”
Adopt, Don’t Shop as your first option #RescuesRock
Through our TV series and blog we work with organizations like THS to dispel the myth that rescued dogs have issues that can’t be solved with love and patience. By promoting adoption and responsible pet parenting, we hope to help lower the number of dogs in shelters.
Happy Tails – Adoptions From The Event
Check out these two wonderful stories from the event posted on The Toronto Humane Society’s Facebook Page
Chase
Chase was adopted on Friday afternoon after being with the shelter since January 2015.
Chase has both medical and behavioral issues that had made it particularly hard to find him a new forever home. He has exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, which means he has trouble digesting his food and processing the nutrients from it.
His ongoing medical care could cost his new owners thousands of dollars annually, but they fell in love at first sight and were willing to go the extra mile for this handsome young lad.
George
Two-year-old George was transferred to THS from another Ontario shelter just a few weeks before the event. Luckily this friendly, sociable dog didn’t have to wait long to be given a second leash on life!
Check out his new brothers, Zac and Matthew.

Adopt A Dog, Save A Life! Blanco:
8-year-old Blanco is a sweet Pomeranian mix who just wants a loving home to enjoy his golden years. Blanco can be a little shy, but once comfortable his friendly and affectionate side shines through!

What a great job they did promoting this event and finding homes for so many animals. In the states today is Just One Day. Throughout the year JOD works at getting information out to shelters and rescues about how to better showcase their animals to make them more appealing for adoption. All over the states there are empty cages today because of this project. Their goal is to move the states to a no kill nation.
thanks for sharing the wonderful news about your adoption event on the blog hop.
