Celebrated annually on August 26th since 2004 , National Dog Day marks a special day to honor our pets. Kilo the Pug thinks every day should be Dog Day and I have to agree. It was founded by Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert and Animal Advocate, Colleen Paige.
National Dog Day falls on the date that Colleen’s family adopted her first dog, Sheltie when Colleen was only 10 years old.
Her love of animals has grown and she is now the founder of such holidays as National Puppy Day, National Mutt Day and National Cat Day as well. Similar to our goals at Talent Hounds, Colleen aims to bring attention to the plight of animals in need and encourage adoption of rescue animals like Kio the Pug.
National Dog Day Celebrates All Dogs
National Dog Day celebrates all dogs from mixed breed mutts to pure breeds, from shelter dogs to family pets, from celebrities to dogs who work selflessly each day to save lives, keep people safe and bring comfort.
Through our work on our documentary series, “Dogs Make A Difference”, we have looked at all of the ways dogs really do benefit our lives. They provide personal protection, help law enforcement, the disabled, detect bombs and drugs and pull victims of tragedy to safety, now they’re even being used to detect cancer and seizures. We truly owe a day to celebrating our best friends and family!
Stand Up For Dogs
National Dog Day is also a day of activism. A day for standing up against any kind of “breed bans”, and discouraging buying dogs from pet stores supplied by puppy mills, backyard breeders, or dodgy internet and newspaper ads.

“Millions of dogs are killed each year because they’re simply unwanted. They’re unwanted because no one realized how to properly care for the demands of the breed. They’re unwanted because they were bought as a Christmas gift for a child that didn’t keep their promises about caring for the dog…unwanted because they shed too much…unwanted because they bark too much. UNWANTED…simply because someone changed their mind. All a dog wants to do is love you and be loved by you. Dogs are amazing, courageous, sensitive and sentient beings that deserve compassion and respect. Please consider bringing what was once considered “unwanted love”, into your heart and home on National Dog Day!” -Colleen Paige
