Keep Your Dog Safe and Happy on Halloween

Make Halloween fun and safe for both of you.

  • Always choose pet clothing that is safe and comfortable for your dog to wear.
  • Make sure your dog can easily stand, sit, lie down, walk, and use the bathroom at any time while in costume.
  • Always double check f there are things sewn onto the outfit, your pet may try to eat them and can get really sick.
  • If your pet doesn’t like getting dressed up, don’t force him or her. Kilo the pug is not a fan of putting his paws through tight sleeves or wearing much so he often just has loose soft things or a simple bandana or collar or harness or vest instead.

Halloween is the second most common time for dogs to get lost after July 4th and a common time for poisoning to occur.

  • Be careful with the Halloween treats and chips.  Do not leave snacks and loot within reach. Kilo will steal chips and chocolates, wrapper and all.

Foods You Should Never Share With Your Dog Kilo sits on couch with bowl full of chips watching Blue Jays Game

Stay safe this Halloween by making sure your dog doesn’t escape or ingest anything dangerous like chocolate or candy, decorations, or costume pieces. Always contact a vet or the ASPCA Hotline immediately if they do.

  • Don’t leave your pet unsupervised or in a high traffic area.
  • Make sure your dog can’t get out the front door while handing out candy. Consider keeping them in their crate with a stuffed Kong or Chew or in a room away from the action if they get anxious or over excited like Kilo.
  • Make sure tags and microchips are up-to-date, detailed and on.
  • If you do have to go out, keep them on a leash during Halloween!

If you do get treats for your dog, make sure you train them to do some tricks for those treats.

  • Mr. N has several costumes this year as well as several events to attend… We’ve seen a lot of food, bee and devil costumes.

  • Cute costumes! For some reason I’m not feeling Halloween this year. I didn’t decorate like I usually do or bother getting costumes for the dogs. I don’t think they mind at all to be honest. I made them homemade Halloween themed treats the other day and they were happy about that.

Yes Kilo only really cares about the treats, and the positive attention from me. I am a little late on decorating but on it today.

  • I’ll be dressing my dog Soldier as a sushi roll this year. I’ll be sure to post a pic on my website as soon as I can get the photo taken. I loved the costume with the pug dressed as a bumblebee and the owner in a beekeeper’s outfit – so clever, but comfortable!

  • Fabulous post with so many things to remember. I have to say my favourite Halloween costume is the pirate!!!! Soooo adorable!

  • Kilo you look great in all of these costumes! We have a great time dressing up for Halloween and I have a couple of costumes in mind for Edie this year. Thank you for the great safety tips for keeping out pets safe during Halloween night.

  • I love all these Halloween costumes! I don’t dress my dogs but we do dress the horses and have fun at the horse show. My daughters asked me to be Wonder Woman this year- and I agreed!

  • I was surprised that more pets weren’t expected to be Wonder Woman this year! I thought that one would really take off. I love all the doggies in costume in your video, so cute!

  • I think that list was pretty accurate for the pet costumes, its not even Halloween yet and I’ve already seen lots of dogs dressed up as pumpkins and a few bees, and I’ve seen a wonder woman too!! Have a safe Halloween!

These costumes are SO cute! I wish our dog would wear a costume. She does not allow any clothing I item to go on her body. Actually she allows it, but then she refuses to move one step! HA!

  • I wish the girls would let me dress them in costumes, but they hate it. Those are some really cute costumes.

  • We had a Halloween photo contest as we do yearly. I love Halloween and I always do a homemade costume for Dex. Great ideas here!
