I took Kilo down to walk along the Toronto waterfront to support the Purina Walk for Dog Guides and then again to visit another event at PawsWay.
The Toronto waterfront is the lakeshore of Lake Ontario in the City of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It spans 46 kilometres between the mouth of Etobicoke Creek and Humber River in the west, and the Rouge River in the East. Much of today’s waterfront was created by landfill and is owned by the City or the Port Authority.
There was still construction going on, but I was impressed at the improvements of the public spaces around PawsWay and Harborfront, just near the core of downtown and the landmark CN Tower. The weather was pleasant and walking down there was such a great way to get out and get active, looking at the sparkling lake and supporting a great cause. There are now lots of dogs and humans walking and plenty of places to take a break in the sun or shade.
Our friend Marcy was out with Sweetie, Shivers and Lulu enjoying the Beaches in the East end of Toronto. We are lucky enough to have several off-leash areas and beaches.
The girls got to explore and even swim (the lake is too cold for me but they loved it).
Fun in the Sun at Cherry Beach
These dogs were out having fun in the sun at Cherry Beach last year. This is such a great off-leash area, but it is surrounded by industrial and port activity.
I believe Toronto has done a very poor job maximizing the beauty and usage of the waterfront historically. There are a few attractive pockets, parks and beaches, but large industrial areas and wasted space in between. My time in Minneapolis by their lakes reinforced this feeling. Luckily they are working on it (slowly).
Waterfront Toronto Project
The Waterfront Toronto project began in 2001 with a 25-year mandate to transform 800 hectares (2,000 acres) of waterfront land into beautiful, sustainable and dynamic public spaces. The project is one of the largest infrastructure projects in North America and one of the largest waterfront redevelopment initiatives ever undertaken in the world. Revitalization is expected to take approximately $30 billion of private and public funding to complete. The project includes the creation of 40,000 residential units, one million square metres of employment space and 300 hectares of parks and public spaces.
I believe this will make a big difference to the way locals and tourists can enjoy Toronto.
Walking with Your Dog
Walking with your dog is such a great way to get out, get active and explore a city. Walking by water is particularly pleasant for me. It definitely reduces my stress. Walking for charity adds even more benefits- supporting worthy causes and hanging out with friends.
I also love the idea of walking shelter dogs in the SlimDoggy post today. The Toronto Humane Society is only a few blocks from the waterfront and PawsWay often hosts rescue and shelter dogs.

We usually do our long walk and/or run early in the morning, so heat isn’t a big factor, but if we walk during the daytime and it is hot out, Mom tries to plan a route by water so we can take a dip to cool off.
Yes Kilo will need to go early or late in summer, as even those walks were a bit hot for him at points. You are lucky you have such beautiful lakes to cool of in. XS

I love walking by water, and whenever I visit Chicago we love to walk along Lake Michigan. We don’t have a big body of water like that in Atlanta, but we do have mountain streams we enjoy about 90 minutes outside of city.

What a neat place to visit! The girls haven’t been to many places with water because we aren’t near too many places that are accessible.
Well that beach does look awesome even if it’s surrounded bu industrial stuff. I also love the idea of walking shelter dogs; I can say that when I volunteered at my local shelter taking the dogs out was my absolute favorite part.
